Dear Residents of Gore Bay,
As we now approach the end of 2024, and the midway mark of the current term of this Council, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the past year and provide an end of year report to all of you.
Remembering a Dedicated Member of Council
Firstly, however I would like to take a moment to reflect on a profound loss in late November from our council with the passing of Ken Blodgett, a dedicated council member for over 20 years and a good friend to many in our community and beyond. Ken’s unwavering commitment to our council, his passion for Gore Bay, and his tireless advocacy for progress, left a lasting mark on our town, one of which will not soon be forgotten.
The Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport – Taking Flight
This year marked the completion of a number of town projects, but perhaps none more important than the completion of the $4.8 million project to build a new and modern airport terminal building, helipad, emergency power system, and an enlarged airplane apron at the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport. This state-of-the-art facility is a significant step forward in positioning Gore Bay as a gateway to Manitoulin Island from across North America. By enhancing connectivity and accessibility, the airport not only supports local businesses and tourism but also opens doors to new opportunities for growth and investment. I want to thank our airport partners, the Municipality of Gordon/Barrie Island and the Township of Burpee & Mills for their financial assistance relating to this project and as well the Federal and Provincial governments for their generous contributions.
Advocating for Improved Health Care for the Residents of Western Manitoulin
Ensuring access to essential health care services is a priority for our council. Starting in late 2022 we have worked tirelessly to advocate for keeping the existing Long Term Care home open in Gore Bay. In collaboration with the Ministry of Long Term Care, Jarlette Health Services, and St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre, we have laid the groundwork for not only the continued operation of Manitoulin Lodge in the shorter term but also the re-development of the Lodge with the construction of a modern 64-bed facility at a new site within Gore Bay. This facility is vital to our west end communities by providing quality care for our seniors and much needed employment for many.
In addition to care for our seniors and in conjunction with the current doctors at our Medical Centre and other partners, council has worked diligently to improve health care for all of our residents by recruiting more doctors to work in our community. In partnership with the Ministry of Health and our west end municipal partners we were successful in attracting in a new family physician to our Medical Centre practice in November with the arrival of Dr. Zeshan Talib. Throughout 2025 we will continue working on the recruitment of another doctor in order to round out our Ministry approved complement of five family doctors. The Medical Centre in Gore Bay provides healthcare services to all the residents of Western Manitoulin and also our summer visitors.
Recreation & Culture – The Volunteer Spirit
Gore Bay continues to shine as a hub for recreation and cultural enrichment. Signature events like Harbour Days bring our community together and showcases the best of what Gore Bay has to offer, while our youth and adult programs, summer theatre, walking trails/boardwalk, and other recreational and cultural activities provide opportunities for residents of all ages.
A special acknowledgment goes to the Gore Bay Community Spirit and Events volunteer group, whose tireless efforts bring vital and entertaining events to our community. Their work has enriched the lives of residents and visitors and they play a key role in fostering the sense of belonging that makes Gore Bay such a special place to call home.
Community Infrastructure Projects – Building for Our Future
This past year council completed a number of important community projects including major upgrades to the water and storm sewer system at the north end of town, the expansion of our public beach, upgrades to our 2 km long boardwalk including new solar lighting, the redevelopment of a passive park on the site of the old playground, the refurbishment of the McQuarrie Gazebo, and the construction of new public washrooms adjacent to the Harbour View Pavilion on our waterfront.
Looking ahead, one of the most exciting initiatives for the new year will be the Downtown Revitalization Project. This project aims to breathe new life into the heart of Gore Bay by enhancing the charm and vibrancy of our downtown area. With plans to not only update that section of Meredith St and its sidewalks, but also to create a streetscape that will increase accessibility and support local businesses, this $2.5 million project is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about creating a shopping experience where residents and visitors alike feel connected and inspired and want to spend time at during all seasons of the year, and to also establish a connection to our amazing waterfront which is another of our prized town possessions. This revitalization effort ensures our downtown remains a lively, welcoming destination where connections are made, stories are shared, and businesses thrive.
A Season of Gratitude and Hope
As we celebrate this special time of year with family and friends, I am filled with gratitude for the resilience, creativity, and the spirit of our community. Gore Bay continues to grow and thrive because of the contributions of residents like you. Whether through volunteering, supporting local businesses, or simply sharing a kind word or helping a neighbor, you embody the values that make Gore Bay a special place we are all proud to call home.
Final Thoughts
On behalf of the Gore Bay Town Council and staff and my family and myself, I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous and healthy new year. May you take a break from your busy schedules and spend time with family and friends as we look forward to 2025 and the opportunities ahead. Together, we will continue to build a bright future for Gore Bay and I thank you for your ongoing support.
Best regards,
Ron Lane
Mayor of Gore Bay
