Provincial Offences

Provincial Offences are quasi-criminal charges primarily issued by police services, various enforcement agencies and city by-law enforcement officers. Charges issued under the Provincial Offences Act, include but are not limited to; driving offences, trespassing, liquor licence, and by-laws such as noise and animal control; along with other contraventions including hunting and fishing infractions.


Please be advised that the Provincial Offences Office cannot provide legal advice or advice regarding the best options for you for resolving your ticket.


If you have selected an option on the back of your ticket and wish to check the status of your matter or court date, please visit www.ontario.ca/ticketsandfines.

Certificates of Offence are issued for Part I Offences, such as speeding, failing to surrender insurance card and various by-law and Ministry offences.

You have 15 days to select an option on the back of your ticket. If you do not select one of the three options, your may be convicted for failing to select an option, and a conviction may be registered against your driving record and an additional cost may be applied.

Option 2 - Early Resolution - Meet with a Prosecutor

If you choose this option, you are choosing to meet with the prosecutor to discuss a possible resolution of the charge, or to request additional time to pay your fine. By choosing this option you are not losing your right to trial and if you are unable to reach a resolution with the prosecutor, a trial date will be set for you. 

To request an early resolution meeting with the prosecutor, you must select Option 2 – Early Resolution – Meet with a Prosecutor. A copy of your request can be submitted:

  • By selecting option two on the back of your ticket and submitting your request by email to gorebaypoa@gorebay.ca.
  • By dropping off your request in-person or by mail at 15 Water Street, Gore Bay, Ontario, P0P 1H0.

Option 3 - Trial-Plead Not Guilty

If you are choosing to appear in court to plead not guilty to the charge(s) against you, you must complete Option 3 on the back of you ticket or complete the Notice of Intention to Appear form.

A Notice of Intention to appear can be submitted by:

  • Email at gorebaypoa@gorebay.ca.
  • In-person or by mail at Gore Bay Provincial Offences Office, 15 Water Street, Gore Bay, Ontario, P0P 1H0.

Once you have filed the Notice of Intention to Appear in Court, you will receive a Notice of Trial in the mail within 6-8 weeks after we receive your request. Please be advised that you must notify our office of any change in address so that your notice of trial is sent to the correct address.

If you wish to pay your fine, there are a number of methods available to you, including:

  • Pay online
  • Paying via e-transfer to poapayment@gorebay.ca. (Please note that this method it is set up for auto-deposit, so please ensure you put your Name and Offence Notice Number or File Number in the memo portion so that your payment can be properly applied)
  • Pay via credit card over the phone at 705-282-2837
  • In person or by mail at 15 Water Street, Gore Bay, Ontario, P0P 1H0
    • There is an after-hours mailbox you can drop off your payment to, which is located outside of the Gore Bay & Union Public Library

Note: You have 15 days to select one option on the back of your ticket. If you do not select an option within 15 days, you are deemed not to be disputing the charge and the Court may convict you in your absence. Additional costs will be added. If you have not paid your fine within the time indicated on your ticket, you will receive a Notice of Fine and Due Date advising you that payment for your fine is still outstanding.

If you were convicted in error through no fault of your own in the last 15 days and wish to reopen your matter, complete the Application for a Reopening.

Notice of Fine and Due Date

Once you have been convicted of a fine, you will receive a Fine and Due Date Notice by regular mail. The notice will provide information regarding your ticket number, type of charge and outstanding fine payment and options.

Failing to make payments on your fine may result in additional fees, suspension of your driver’s licence, garnishment of wages and involvement of third-party collection agencies.

Need more time to pay a fine

If you have been convicted of an offence and require more time to pay your fine, complete the Application for an Extension of Time to Pay. Your application will be reviewed within 5-10 business days. It is your responsibility to follow up with the Provincial Offences Court Office for the outcome of your application. Convicted in Error

If you were convicted in error through no fault of your own in the last 15 days and wish to reopen your matter, complete the Application for a Reopening.

If you have received a Notice of Trial, an Early Resolution Notice, or were summonsed to court with a Summons to Defendant, you (or a representative) may attend your court date in-person or virtually (via Zoom). 

Please note: If you are scheduled for a trial, please be prepared in accordance with our Exhibits Guide.

  • OPP, UCCM, or WTPS Part I Certificates of Offence
  • OPP, UCCM, or WTPS Part III Informations
  • MNRF Part I Certificates of Offence and Part III Informations

Unable to Attend Your Court Matter

If you or a representative are unable to attend your scheduled court date, please contact the Provincial Offences Court Office at 705-282-2837 for assistance with completing the required forms to change the date.

The Provincial Offences Ontario Court of Justice is located at 15 Water Street, Gore Bay, Ontario, P0P 1H0 in the Council Chambers.

Individuals who require a disability-related accommodation or assistance are required to contact the Provincial Offences Office to make arrangements.

When it is possible to do so it is preferred that defendants appear for their court appearance via video. If you are having audio difficulties while appearing via video you may call in to the audio portion using the above teleconference information.

Prior to their court date, defendants will also receive a court notice that will provide them with the above information needed to access the virtual platform via audio or video conferencing. Crowns, Prosecutors, and Charging Agencies will receive information regarding virtual court appearances from the Gore Bay POA office.

In order to file a Notice of Appeal, please complete the applicable document(s) listed below and file the same with the Ontario Court of Justice located at 27 Phipps Street, Gore Bay.
