Garbage and Recycling (Transfer Station)

Address

The Transfer Station is located at 14591 Highway 542, Gordon, Ontario, between the Ontario Provincial Police Office and the Manitoulin Golf Course.

 

Transfer Station Hours

Summer Hours

  • June 15 - September 15 each year
  • Mondays from 8:00am - 5:00pm
  • Wednesdays from 11:00am - 5:00pm
  • Saturdays from 9:00am - 1:00pm

Winter Hours

  • September 16 - June 14 each year
  • Wednesdays from 11:00am - 5:00pm
  • Saturdays from 9:00am - 1:00pm

Waste from buildings being demolished or renovated will not be accepted. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: 

  • Toilets;
  • Doors;
  • Windows;
  • Wood products;
  • Etc. 

Should you have these items, please contact one of the following contractors to make arrangements to take your items to the Espanola Landfill:

  • Dodge Haulage at 705-869-3867; or 
  • GFL Environmental Inc. at 705-869-2447.

Metal/Food Beverage Containers

  • Please empty, rinse and place metal/food beverage containers in a commingle recycling bin.
  • Empty, dry paint cans (with the lids removed) are also accepted.

Aluminum Foil Wraps & Trays

  • Rinse and crumple foil and trays and place them in an empty commingle recycling bin.

Rigid Plastic Containers

  • Only plastics numbered 1-7 are accepted. Rigid food, beverage, personal, pet care, and detergent containers are also accepted.
  • Empty, rinse, and remove lids of all containers. 

Please compost all “wet garbage” (i.e. organic matter, such as all food scraps and grass cuttings) at home.

All garbage which is non-recyclable must be placed in clear garbage bags. Please note that no coloured bags will be accepted at the Transfer Station under any circumstances.

Garbage in “kitchen catchers” or tied into large clear plastic bags and the shopping bags will not be accepted.

Medical wastes, including (but not limited to) diabetic needles, will not be accepted. Please check with local pharmacies and the Gore Bay Medical Centre regarding disposal.

Glass Food/Beverage Bottles and Jars

  • Bag and place glass food/beverage bottles and jars with regular garbage.

Cardboard

  • Store your waste cardboard in a dry place and bring it to the transfer site. (Please ensure it is collapsed when brought to the site). Place the collapsed cardboard in the cardboard bins.
  • Examples of items accepted include: books, newspaper, single-layered cardboard, etc.

White Metal/Scrap Metal

  • A bin is available at the transfer site for this white metal/scrap metal. A tipping fee will be charged by the Transfer Site Attendant.

Hazardous Wastes

  • Hazardous wastes are not accepted at the transfer site.

  1. In order to receive a tag for the Transfer Station, you must be an owner of a property within the Town of Gore Bay or the Municipality of Gordon/Barrie Island.
  2. Only the Landowner (or Landlord) may pick up a Transfer Station Tag.
  3. A $25.00 charge will be required for the replacement of a lost tag reported. The log will note the new tag number and the previous tag will be voided on the record log.
  4. The Town of Gore Bay will not issue a tag for a vacant property. The Municipality of Gordon/Barrie Island will issue a tag for vacant land, but only if you have not received one for a residence or cottage.

Our Transfer Station has four (4) Sic Sox Circular textile recycling bins, which help to reduce the amount of textile waste that heads to our landfills. 

Examples of items accepted include:

  • Household and industrial textiles in all conditions
  • Bedding, towels, pillows in all conditions
  • Clothing in all conditions
  • Gently used shoes and handbags
  • Stuffed animal toys
